Hmm...I think that it's just an eroded rock, though Tyler brings up an interesting possibility.

The part that I was interested in mainly was the pitted part that has tiny crystals covering the yellowish insert of the rock. Maybe this will show it better.

How interesting! The blunt, smooth center break makes it look like that could be flint in the center? Really cool.

I believe it may be calcite that leeched into rock cavities but I`m not positive. It would take some type of mineral deposits to form the cystals in hollow areas of rock I am sure. It looks as if I could be able to separate the surrounding rock from it if I had a fossil prep tool. Which I don`t have at this time. It is like a pensized pneumatic chipper much like a dental tool. Maybe Santa Claus will bring me one. lol

That is one awesome rock! I too, haven't come across one with such interesting formation and color. Definitely some calcite, and even some quartz (is that crystalization I see?). And yeah, it totally looks like flesh in some areas...whoa!

Am I wrong or does it appear sections are Agatized? I have a segment of a Cephalopod that has the same appearence. Could this be a chunk calcitic limestone? In NJ it's called "coyman's".

I read somewhere amongst thousands of paleontology and archeology articles that some bones are agatized and some are also chert. There can even be some made of flint. I guess it's possible that part could be agatized and part could be of an other fosilized construction if chemicals pooled differently when they formed.
