how does one know if a person finds real bone vs. fossilized bone?

Thanks for the reply. What I meant in my last statement was that the tooth or bone appears to have been broken before it was fossilized because the spot where it was broken looks like the jagged edge ...

I guess that depends on the mineral exchanged. I'll tell ya that the mastadon bone is heavy! The bone I found (and now have as a puzzle) was about 10 pounds.
