Overlaps like scales in some places.
  • gpraum@fuse.net says
Yes. It is white and hard and feels just like bone. I will propably see if I can get this out also without hurting it, but it propably will chip in places. Thanks for response Dazza. Confused

Now, THAT is a find!! But, to be honest, I'm stumped. Confused
  • Raptor Lewis says
gpraum- Take it to a Museum first or any University's Geology department, so you can get in touch with an expert before you start to get it out. (Obviously, if you try to get it out first, and then get help, then you may not get the help you need.)

    Just a little tip.....Wink
  • tyler keenan says
or you said you found it in kentucky right? i honestly think its just a crushed crinoid Confused
  • gpraum@fuse.net says
Yes. Same area as the strange looking rock Tyler. Very Happy
  • tyler keenan says
well, in my guess and with my smarts on marine life fossils. Im going to say its a crinoid. there a really beautiful fossil. Underwater flowers. Mybe look them up on google? Smile
  • Raptor Lewis says
Duh! Of course! Why I didn't think of it, I don' know!! Embarassed I guess I was just tired! Wink lol

  • Si02 says
That looks just like a Nautiloid that I have. Very nice!
  • tyler keenan says
nautiloid? those are squids. it looks more so like a crinoid Confused
  • Si02 says
Nautiloids are not squids. They are related to the modern-day nautilus. They had a hard shell. Google for pictures and you will see it looks just like one.
  • Si02 says
I'm sorry, a modern day nautilus is a type of nautiloid, but back in the paleozoic they were long and not round like the nautiluses of today Smile
  • tyler keenan says
yeah i know. they were endocerases. im just saying i have many endocerases and many crinoids i can tell the difference Very Happy
  • Si02 says
It could be a crinoid. It's hard to tell with many of these pictures.
  • tyler keenan says
yeah its kinda crushed to! lol Very Happy
  • gpraum@fuse.net says
Yes. It looks as if it has has some other rocks or debri hit it a few times over its life. This one I removed also and it did break in 3 pieces but can be put together as a whole. Looks same as it does in picture when pieced together but there is really no underside structure. Confused
  • tyler keenan says
you know i bet when the flower died and fell down it was crushed bye some thing on the sea floor! Surprised
  • gpraum@fuse.net says
Possibly. Could have been anything. Smile
  • tyler keenan says
yeah most likely a crinoid or a squid though Cool
  • Si02 says
I sent the photo to my dad and he agreed with Tyler and I that it could be a cephalapod or crinoid, but that it is difficult to tell from the picture. If only we could hold it! Haha.
  • Si02 says
Squids are still relatively new to the fossil record, having only evolved during the Cretaceous. Unless you mean a nautiloid? Very Happy
  • gpraum@fuse.net says
    Hum. Ok. Smile
  • tyler keenan says
yeah either way lol im only 14. Smile
  • tyler keenan says
oh yeah! and ive only been fossil hunting for almost 10 months Very Happy
  • Si02 says
It's ok, I know you're young. I'm not attacking you, lol. I'm just letting you know Smile
  • tyler keenan says
yeah. I know lol. Its just that i dont use the more scientific names. I use the easyier ones that more people will Know and understand what they are Very Happy
  • gpraum@fuse.net says
Shake hands, Now come on. Its ok, everything is fine. Heck I'm just a part explorer that wonders around from time to time scratching my head. Oh and carrying a chisel and hammer Laughing Laughing Laughing
  • tyler keenan says
yeah im not trying to start any thing lol Laughing im just saying Smile
  • gpraum@fuse.net says
Don't make me call Indiana Jones. Laughing Hey its ok contraversy is good from time to time. We all can learn from it, especially by keeping our patience. Very Happy
  • gpraum@fuse.net says
I can respect anyones opinion, or thoughts. Smile
  • tyler keenan says
haha its okay really Very Happy
  • Si02 says
Wow. If people think my opinion on what a fossil could be is anything close to controversy maybe I just shouldn't post here Confused I'm so happy to see someone Tyler's age posting here, because I wish I was as active in the paleontology community at 14 as he is, but I don't want to be "controversial" for correcting his terms. I think in the long run it will be very helpful! I've only had a couple of classes in paleo recently, but I'm hoping that I can help spread what I learned to this wonderful community.
  • Si02 says
As well as also learn from others Very Happy
  • tyler keenan says
"CONTROVERSIAL!" no no no no no no your not please its okay you can stay i didnt think it was just a small arguement with him. lol and im glad im into paleontology now those are my life plans to be a paleontologist that travels the world! Very Happy
