Description: I just happened to spot this looking back at me in a pile of rocks that I had picked up in my backyard so the lawnmower didn`t hit them. I had dumped the wheelbarrow Sunday and just noticed it after it got rained on yesterday. It looks to be a plant but I have no idea what it is. I see no crinoid stems and what does appear to be a stem is not like a crinoid. The matrix is Cretaceous Austin chalk. I`ll post pic of other side that contains what looks like teeth.

It almost looks like a carving of a baby wrapped in a blanket. does chalk cause wood to fossilize fast?

I really have no idea Rickymouse. Chalk is about 95% lime with small trace amounts of other elements. It seems like the lime would quickly remove any moisture in whatever it encased though. I`ll get some macro shots and post a good one for details.

It looks a little like a leg section of an animal with a ball part of it's joint too.
