Very true, indeed, Tyler, there are facilities in Germany and Tokyo that are doing that as we post.

Ther would be very limited space for them. if polar bears fall through the ice, mammoths will 10 times over!

hey its not the question about whether the mammoth is going to fall off the ice its about that whether he is gonna live its they are bringing them alive and of course if they bring them to life they will have some problems and die in their childhood there are so less animals that we have cloned we humans cloned an simple ship with so much difficulty and so much pain and here we are talking about animal that is hundred times bigger than this sheep and lived 30000 years before if they are trying to do it they can face life imprisonment and many other punishment in fact i will not favor this cloning

I read this article about cloning mammoths and I was very upset with what I was reading. They plan to use African elephants as surrogate mothers. But some of the scientist brought up the argument that they don't have protein in their DNA samples and can not produce a mammoth without it. Then the mad evil scientist said well in ten years they'll be able to side step that with man made material.

Though it would be wonderful to have dino's cruising the earth again I don't like the idea of artificially created creatures Why can't people let nature just be nature and admit that whenever they manipulate with it it always ends in destruction?

The gestation period of the African elephant is 22 months. I would think that half way through the pregnancy the mother would die from the sheer weight and size of the calf and if she survived the pregnancy she probably wouldn't survive the birth. These scientist need to be slapped for suggesting such a thing.

No worries my dears. If an African elephant is impregnated, the scientists would not bring her to a full term but perform a C-section before either the mother or baby were at risk... all performed safely and then mother and child would be well cared for and the baby lovingly raised by its surrogate mama.

As an update, they have successfully brought baby mice into the world from frozen sperm, so the technology is definitely there.

Yes, they are going to try and clone a mammoth. This is how they're going to do it:

They are going to attempt to extract enough DNA to put into an elephant fetus. Then they're going to put the DNA into the still-developing fetus of an elephant, and when the elephant gives birth it should give birth to a mammoth.
