Description: I`m not at all sure just what this is. It may be some coral remnants or possibly bone. Any ideas?

Dr. Straight do you have any ideas on this?

My guess is that we're looking at a form sedimentary structure rather than a fossil. There are no diagnostic edges, outlines, shapes, or porosity that indicate bone, and coral usually has extensive internal striation, both growth-parallel and growth-perpendicular. I have seen fracture-filling minerals in brecciated limestone coat surfaces like this that when weathered give the rock an encrusted look. One test would be a strategic droplet of acid on the pale veneer. A reaction would rule out bone, but it won't help determine whether it is coral. Without better images and even possibly a look at the hand sample, this is my best estimate.

Thanks Dr. straight, I find some strange objects here when I dig. All from the creataceous Gulf.
