I've collected minerals and fossils a few times in central Arizona. Unfortunately not anything of note ( except petrified wood) around Sedona or environs. There are, however, some good mineral collecting sites...especially around Jerome. On the positive side, and it makes a nice not-too-lengthy day of scenic driving and fossil collecting, about 15 miles East of Payson on hwy 260 is a 'sort of town' called Kohl Ranch. At the bend before the town is an excellent Upper Carboniferous invertebrate fossil collecting spot. No walking in even necessary. Lots of brachiopods, gastropods, corals and others right beside the road. We even found a few crinoid heads. Anyone in Kohl Ranch at the store or service station would certainly know the site as it almost in town. Also, along this part of 260 it's good to stop randomly and check old stream beds, etc. There are some sporadic Devonian outcrops that yield some decent atrypid brachiopods. Ask about a place called Diamond Creek, Devonian fossils are found there (also some really nice quartz crystals, hence the name 'Diamond' Creek. We found one real beauty). I hope another participant has more positive info for you on any collecting sites within a few kilometers of Sedona itself.
