A dictionary is a fine idea. Tyler, all gastropods are snails and they can be modern (extant) or fossils (extinct). They can also be a fossil specimen of a species that has continued on...

They can have shell material still attached or be an internal mold but in both cases they are referred to as gastopods - which means roughtly stomach foot.
