This I found in my backyard. The oyster shells are smooth with the surface on this face of large piece. It has break patterns of an igneous rock. The smaller piece looks like a seahell of the past but dark interior with coral colored grain is strange. Is it in fact a shell? I can only figure out how to send 1 pic at a time on here so I`m sending another view with another part of question.

JSpencer- The first one looks to me like a "fossil" shell by volcanic activity. In other words, the one on the left looks like some sort of shell "burned" into a piece of obsidian.

As for the one on the right.......I....Have no idea. I admit I'm at a loss. Sorry, I can't be of more help.

That is just what I thought raptor but as you can see in this pic, some of the oyster shells are on the surface and others contained in mass of rock. Shouldn`t there be some sign of the intense heat caused by this volcanic rock formation on the shiny white shells? It does break like an igneous rock as I stated indicating volcanic origin but still I have to question the obvious you know.

No problem. I`ll add them soon to album. But when I try to use magnifier it will only cover top half of pic. Is anyone else having this problem?

After looking through some fossil photos this seems to closely resemble a sponge encased in flint. It may also explain the oyster shells attached. Flint as black as coal is common just to the south of us. Here it is a mix with the colors. Mostly medium to dark brown in color. What do you think?

Yes Tyler they are oysters but what they are encased in is the question. The black rock itself. I was born and raised on Louisiana`s Gulf Coast in Cajun country. I know my seafood well. My father had a boat that we shrimped on every weekend. I shucked many oysters growing up.
