Does anyone know how some of the ancient lineages of trees are doing in Oz? Idle curiosity, but after all, this is a newsgroup. John GW

The fires are nowhere near the Wollemi pines, if that is what you meant. Anyway, today it is pouring rain and the fires are all but out.

Glad to hear it. Yes, I think those were the ones I had in mind. Memory's not all it could be - arent't they about 40 miles from Sydney, and rather small trees? Regards John GW

According to the National Parks flyer I picked up after you asked this (I was staying in a NSW park when the fires broke out), there is a small stand (location kept secret except to researchers) of these pines in the Wollemi National Park, which is 100km (60 m) NW of Sydney. I don't think there were any fires there, but they must be able to survive them - Australian bush is notorious for fires, as California and Israel have discovered where eucalypts have been extensively planted.
