BBC News Online Friday, 28 July, 2000, 16:04 GMT 17:04 UK Dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago

Dinosaurs were not wiped out by a meteorite or a planetary catastrophe but by a serious flatulence problem, according to a Chinese news report. Dinosaur wind contained a high proportion of methane gas - powerful enough to penetrate the ozone layer, said the China Youth Daily quoting a French scientist.

'The animals, weighing from 80 to 100 tonnes, would eat on average between 130 and 260 kilos of food every day. They would fart non-stop,' said the traditionally austere paper.

Dinosaurs became extinct after more than 160 million years on earth

During the dinosaurs' time on earth 'the atmosphere became charged with methane, which finally damaged the ozone layer and brought about great changes in the vegetation,' it added.

The changes caused a food shortage which eventually wiped them out.

The ozone layer protects the atmosphere from the sun's ultra-violet rays.

There are numerous theories as to why dinosaurs died out.

The most common are: a cooling of the climate

massive volcanic eruptions which unleashed poisonous gases and caused widespread climatic change

a large asteroid striking earth, which caused several extremely cold months China Youth Daily did not identify the French scientist behind the latest theory.

So does this mean we will have two catagories of scientists now. The PRO-FARTISTS and the ANTI-FARTISTS?

My theory: a gigantic meteorite or even several collided in deep space and destroyed themselves leaving only a massive cloud of dust. This cloud travelled to earth at incredible speed and entered the Earths atmosphere. It burned up but was so huge it created a MASSIVE heat furnace which was flung down onto the surface of the earth. This ran around the earth's surface like a tidal wave and burned everything in it's path. No more dinaosaurs, no more anything but an untouched earth which regenerated from all the deep sea creatures untouched. That's it! Any one got a better idea?

Heres my theory, dinosaur species were in decline at the end of the Cretaceous as were most species at this time.
There was large techtonic activity going on at this period as were large volcanic actvity especially in the area around India (The Decccan traps).
Large Tsunamis would have ravaged the land,
Volcanic ash would have blocked out the sun light
plants were unble to photosyntesize properly.
In the oceans plankton would be unable to reproduce properly this would have a knock on effect in the food chain.
And just to top it all off a giant asteroid the size Manhattan Island crashes into The Yuccatan Peninsula.
The rocks in this area would have vaporised releasing Sulphuric Acid in the shape of acid rain.So killing 70% of life on Earth.

What the. . . What kind of half brained idea is that? Dinosaurs survived for 250 million years. They was the most sucessful group of animals on earth. Go back to pre-school. Leave dinosaur paleontology to the experts.

First of all! Elas was probably making a joke.

Second, those last two sentences were, just plain mean!! I'm afraid I must ask you to edit that post or get off this thread. I am a Moderator and I have the power to do that.

Why you would come off so nasty, I have no idea, but stop!

I DON'T TOLERATE INSULTS AND NAME-CALLING EVER!!

No problem. That's my job here!! I, personally, believe he/she was making a joke, yet Filo-Frak showed some intolerable behavior. One more and this thread will be deleted and I may report him/her to the Administrators, though I'd hate to do that.
