A line from an episode of the TV series Angel sticks with me: 'If nothing that you do matters, all that matters is what you do.' The lack of a Great Scorekeeper in the Sky Who Will Dole Out Rewards and Punishments in the Afterlife is no excuse to not try to be nice to each other. 'Be nice because you want to' seems to be vastly morally superior to 'be nice because you will be punished after death if you don't' IMHO.
