Have you read the new book by Peter Larson and Kristin Donnan, all about his adventures with dinosaur Sue and so many others? It is a great read!

It also has a great number of scientific inaccuracies. I encourage you to read Christopher Brochu's recent monograph in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology on Sue's skeleton. Although much of it is of little interest to the amateur, his discussion of Sue's pathology and the so- called 'robust' versus 'gracile' morph issue is important and easy for the lay person to understand.

Daniel, who is the 'you' in your post? FWIW, I am not a 'lay person' nor an 'amateur' paleontologist. Are the inaccuracies you see in 'Rex Appeal' matters of interpretation or of fact? If of interpretation, forget about it. If of fact, please be specific.

[Snipped 94 lines of text, which I presume to be quoted from a paper by Chris Brochu.]

Daniel,

Chris Brochu saying a thing is so (or maybe so) doesn't make it a fact. And most of what you quoted is clearly interpretation, so you have not made your case that 'Rex Appeal' is inaccurate.

Gasp, can everyone taste the animosity here? I'm sure that Dan Snyder wasn't directing his comment at you, he was probably just letting us all know that it wasn't overly technical. I wouldn't take offense to such a statement.

Quite the contrary. There is _positive_ evidence that the holes on Sue's jaw are not bite marks, for example. There is _positive_ evidnece that the fibula is not broken and rehealed. There is _positive_ evidence that there was a clavicle of a particular type, et hoc genus omne. By contrast, there is an absence of evidence of bite marks, hobbling dinosaurs, spousal care, etc. which are presented in Larson's 2002 book. This was the thrust of my first post.

However, if this is going to degenerate into a semantical argument over what constitutes fact versus interpretation, I'll say no more.
