One fine summers day hike we had seen small pointed objects from the cliff side. We had picked up two but had seen dozens all over the cliff. Would really like to know finally what these fossils are.

I'd say they look like belemnites (link)

Belemnites are extinct squid-like animals that swam the seas in the time of the dinosaurs. All that is usually preserved from a belemnite is the distal tip of the shell - known as the 'Guard' (link)

What you write about there being many of them also fits well.

Yes it does all fit together now...trilobytes and horn coral are also close by.
